The park of ruins

The Monastic Museum of Denmark comprises a 10,000m2 park of ruins where archaeological excavations have laid bare the foundations of the medieval Cistercian monastery of The Precious Island. The Cistercian Order had its origins in France but quickly spread to the rest of Europe. One spring day in 1172 only ca. 75 years after the foundation of the first Cistercian monastery a group of monks arrived at a place called Øm in Danish. Here they founded the monastery, Cara Insula, and settled down to live according to Benedictine Rules.
Graves from the Middle Ages are preserved in the large park and some are visible. The museum also has a large permanent exhibition of finds made during the many excavations carried out in the monastery confines. In particular there is a large and rather famous collection of skeletons, the largest permanently exhibited west of the Great Belt.
