The daily life | The art of healing and skeletons Script and the written word | Technology and work Ground-plan | The museum garden | The brewer's garden Devotional life The most important part of a monk's life in the monastery was participation in the daily services, masses and prayers at the canonical hours. The monks started their day at 2 o'clock in the morning or rather in the night! There was a lighted lamp in the monks' dormitory so there was always light in the room. Monks slept in their habits so that it was easy to get up for the morning mass and it served to dampen the desires of the flesh. Thereafter the monks were called to prayers seven more times during the course of the day, the monks prayed for both the living and for dead souls in order to ease their passage through purgatory. The many rosaries bear witness to the monks' holy life and their many hours in prayer. The monks used the rosaries for absolution saying the Pater Noster and Ave Maria. A sin could be the playing with dice, as that was the Devil's game! ![]() |
