The brewer's garden

The brewer's garden contains plants used by the monks to brew beer. 6 rads (measurements) of barley, hops and malt were used in brewing.

The brewers garden

There is an exhibition showing the various processes of medieval brewing.

In 1554 the King ordered an inventory to be made of all the articles and animals in the Monastery of Øm. It is noted in the inventory that the monastery had its own brewery in the west wing and the scullery.

Monk by a beer barrel There was also a large store of beverages. In the victual cellar there was in all 103 barrels of beer, equivalent to 32,000 bottles. Most of it was of very low alcohol content. Only one of the barrels in the monastery contained strong beer from Hamburg.

As in other parts of Denmark during the Middle Ages beer had an important role in the monastery. It was an important source of nutrition at a time when one could not depend
on the quality of the water.
The monks in the Monastery of Øm were no drunkards!
